The bad news continues for victims who contracted fungal meningitis, after receiving contaminated steroid injections manufactured by a Massachusetts-based company. New reports now claim that many of these people are now suffering from dangerous spine infections.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the total number of people who have contracted infections after being administered the tainted injections, is now 424. The number of fatalities linked to these infections is reported to be 31. Reports of infections have come in from 19 states, including Texas.
The outbreak of fungal meningitis is linked to the use of tainted injections of the epidural methylprednisolone acetate, which is produced by Massachusetts-based New England Compounding Center. Authorities now believe that the steroid was contaminated with several different types of fungi that are normally found in plants and soil. However, investigations have not been able to identify the root of transmission of the fungi, from soil to the injections.
Texas product liability attorneys believe that there are more complications in store for these unfortunate victims. As many as one-third of people currently suffering from fungal meningitis from contaminated injections will also suffer spinal infections.
These infections are epidural abscesses, or colonies of fungus growing in the spine. Other patients are believed to be suffering from a condition called arachnoiditis. Both medical conditions are extremely serious, and could even result in long-term crippling injuries. In severe cases, these conditions could even be fatal.
Detection of the spinal infection has proved to be a challenge, because these are people who were already suffering from severe back pain even before they received the injections. In some cases, it's becoming hard to detect whether the pain is related to a spinal infection, or whether it is the old pain returning.
