New research finds that far too many American workers are reporting to work in a sleepy, tired or fatigued condition. Workers need to get enough sleep to function at their best, and Houston workplace injury lawyers are concerned that those levels of fatigue increases the risk of being involved in an accident.
The research was conducted by Harvard Medical School, and found that as many as one-third of workers are simply not getting enough sleep at night. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 40.6 million American workers, or roughly 30% of the workforce in the country is not getting enough sleep. That kind of sleep deprivation costs the US economy approximately $60.2 billion in lost productivity annually.
However, Houston workplace injury lawyers are much more concerned about the risk of injuries caused to workers who are forced to work in a less than 100% alert and attentive condition.
It seems that chronic fatigue is a consistent problem among many categories of workers. That kind of chronic fatigue leads to frayed tempers, frustrations in the workplace, and workplace errors. A person who is sleepy and functioning on 4 or 5 hours of sleep is much more likely to make a serious error. Workers in the manufacturing or refinery industries, which are heavily based on shifts, and in which small mistakes can mean the difference between life and death, may be at a special risk of injuries.
Fortunately, some companies are waking up to the realization that sleep deprivation is a major workplace safety risk, and are investing in sleep education programs for workers.
