Toyota announced its recall of nearly 700,000 vehicles, including 495,000 Tacoma trucks made during the 2005 through 2009 model years that need to have their steering wheel spiral cable assemblies replaced.
The Toyota recall was announced after reports that friction may occur in some vehicles between the assembly's spiral cable and the retainer, and over time, cut the connection to the driver's airbag.
The airbag defect could cause the driver’s airbag to become deactivated and fail to deploy in a car crash.
Toyota is in the process of obtaining the replacement parts it needs to remedy the large airbag defect problem. Once it does, it will notify the affected owners of the affected Tacomas by mail in early April. Drivers can take the affected vehicles for repair free of charge when the parts become available.
The Toyota airbag defect news is the latest in a string of wide-ranging recalls over the past three years for the Japanese automotive manufacturer.
